Following the success of the Facilities Improvement Mosques project in November 2023, Suriname has officially launched the Facilities Improvement Mandirs project on February 28, 2025. This initiative, spearheaded by the Office of the President, aims to enhance the infrastructure of Hindu temples (mandirs) across the country, strengthening their role in society. The project’s first ceremonial donation presentation took place on February 28, with three out of twelve mandirs from different regions receiving essential resources. These donations included 40 chairs, five tables, a water dispenser, and 20 copies of Srila Prabhupada’s El Bhagavad-gita tal como es (Dutch edition) per mandir. The initiative is designed to equip religious institutions with practical resources to better serve their communities.

The ceremony was led by Jason Saiman, project coordinator and spokesperson for the President, on behalf of H.E. Chandrikapersad Santokhi, President of the Republic of Suriname. Also in attendance was Hakiem Lalmahomed, project sub-coordinator and Deputy Director of the National Youth Institute. The remaining mandirs across Suriname will receive similar resources in the coming weeks.

Strengthening Social and Cultural Fabric

The Republic of Suriname is located in northern South America, sometimes considered part of the Caribbean and the West Indies. In Suriname’s diverse, multi-ethnic society, religious institutions play a critical role in promoting social cohesion, preserving cultural identity, and supporting vulnerable communities. Jason Saiman emphasized that beyond their religious functions, mandirs contribute significantly to education, social welfare, and cultural preservation. He stated, By providing them with the right resources, we enable these institutions to continue their essential work and strengthen the fabric of our society.

The donated copies of the Bhagavad-gita books will serve as a tool for spiritual education and personal development, particularly for the younger generation. Many mandirs actively engage in youth education programs, helping young people build both spiritual awareness and social skills.

Hakiem Lalmahomed highlighted the role of religious institutions in caring for the elderly, fostering family values, and maintaining community spirit. He remarked, “Care for the elderly is crucial, as it teaches younger generations to respect their elders. This project not only supports mandirs but also strengthens the social structure of our society.”

Commitment to a United and Inclusive Future

The Surinamese government views this initiative as an investment in social harmony and stability. Recognizing the significant role religious organizations play in strengthening communities, the Office of the President remains committed to the successful implementation of the project.

With the first phase complete, the remaining mandirs will soon receive their share of the support. As Suriname continues to uphold its rich cultural diversity, initiatives like Facilities Improvement Mandirs reinforce the nation’s dedication to inclusivity, respect, and unity.
