This year, the Krishna Balarama Youth Group (KBYG) in Johannesburg marks a monumental milestone—21 years of fostering devotion, community, and transformation within ISKCON South Africa. Over two decades, KBYG has been a beacon of inspiration, not just for youth in Johannesburg but for devotees and seekers across the nation and beyond. As they celebrate this occasion, they reflect on their journey, challenges, contributions, and the enduring spirit that has shaped the platform’s legacy.
The story of Krishna Balaram Youth Group (KBYG) began in the late 1990s with a small group of young devotees in Randburg, Johannesburg. “We used to travel to Lenasia or Pretoria for programs, but there was nothing close to home,” shared Kartik Das, one of KBYG’s founding members. “We didn’t want the formal structure of a namahatta, so we started as a ‘cell group.'” With just six members at its inception, the group began gathering in the warm and welcoming home of Prahladini Radhika Devi Dasi and Dhanudhar Das.
“Our initial goal was to bridge the gap between very strict spiritual practices and too liberal material thought and behavior,” Kartik explained. “We wanted to create a balance—being in this world but not of it. The group was about inclusivity and love, creating a space where people of all nationalities, beliefs, and preferences felt safe and supported.”
Their first major activity, the National Youth Day Harinam on June 16th, 1999, set the tone for what KBYG would become. “We had amazing attendance for the Harinam, which ended in a park with a feast and socializing,” Kartik recalled. “Our intentions were always genuine. We wanted to challenge the status quo and create something meaningful.”
Guidance from Bhakti Tirtha Swami
A pivotal moment in KBYG’s journey came when Kartik sought guidance from his spiritual mentor, Bhakti Tirtha Swami, on starting a youth group. Bhakti Tirtha Swami’s advice and eventual naming of the group were deeply influential. “I believe he intended to show the cowherd spirit of sharing, love, and service,” Kartik shared. This ethos, encapsulated in the idea of “heart-sharing,” became the foundation of KBYG’s culture.
Memories That Last a Lifetime
Reflecting on KBYG’s early days, Kartik spoke of the energy and camaraderie that defined their gatherings. “Our forming stands out as a memorable experience,” he said. “It started with just six people, but at one point, we had close to 50. We were just having so much fun in each other’s company that we didn’t want to leave.”
He fondly recalled events like the first KB Mela, where their faith in one another inspired a bold vision. “Most devotees didn’t even know the artists we had planned around invitation-wise, but we all believed in our desires to build something meaningful.” Other cherished memories include Mangal Arati programs at the late Namaacarya Das’s home, the group’s hilarious plays, and the feasts that brought everyone together. On a personal note, Kartik shared, “The most memorable experience for me was meeting my wife through the group.”
A Legacy of Impact and Inclusivity
KBYG was instrumental in introducing world-renowned kirtaniyas like Gauravani & As Kindred Spirits, The Mayapuris, Jhanavi Harrison, and Acyuta Gopi Dasi to Southern Africa. These Krishna Conscious artists inspired communities across the region, taking kirtan culture and philosophical discussions to new heights.
The group’s innovative spirit extended beyond music. “We always rotated topics and activities to keep things engaging,” Kartik noted. This approach fostered an inclusive and vibrant atmosphere that attracted diverse participants and inspired initiatives like the Randburg Ratha Yatra Festival and other outreach platforms.
Carrying the Torch Forward
Even after stepping back from active involvement, Kartik remains deeply connected to KBYG’s mission. “Love was our guiding principle, even when criticized for it,” he emphasized. “We showed intense love for one another, which helped us grow with a solid foundation.”
Looking ahead, Kartik expressed hope that KBYG continues to embody its core values of collaboration, inclusivity, and service. “Our purpose was to have serious debate and discussion. We demonstrated our understanding through service, and that’s why our events were some of the best seen in this country,” he said.
For Jagannath Das and Dhanudhar Das, current co-team leaders of KBYG, the group continues to embody its founding values while evolving to meet the needs of a new generation. “KBYG has always been about creating a safe space for youth to explore their spirituality,” shared Jagannath. He reflected on how the group has grown into a platform for cultivating open dialogue and deep personal connections, staying true to the ethos of inclusivity and love instilled by its founders.
“Programs like the retreats and kirtan nights are about more than just events; they are transformative experiences,” added Dhanudhar. “These gatherings inspire youth to engage deeply, not just with our philosophy but with each other as a supportive community.”
Jagannath emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance between spiritual depth and cultural relevance. “We’ve learned to adapt while staying rooted in the principles handed down to us. For instance, introducing creative workshops and philosophical discussions keeps things dynamic and engaging for today’s youth.”
Reflecting on KBYG’s legacy, Dhanudhar noted, “It’s a humbling responsibility to carry forward what the founders of the KBYG platform envisioned—a space of collaboration, heartfelt service, and meaningful connection. Every event we host is a tribute to their efforts and a step forward in keeping the spirit of KBYG alive.”
Celebrating 21 Years of KBYG
As KBYG approaches its 21st anniversary, Kartik reflected on the group’s enduring legacy. “After 21 years, I’m grateful the youth group still continues,” he said. “It gives us confidence that what we desired as a group and the spirit with which we did it carries through. KBYG has been an integral part of ISKCON’s legacy, acting as both a bridge and a conduit for many.”
With its foundation built on love, inclusivity, and service, KBYG remains a beacon of inspiration for the youth of ISKCON South Africa, ensuring that the spirit of Krishna Consciousness thrives for generations to come.
As KBYG celebrates 21 years, it invites devotees, well-wishers, and seekers to join in honoring this legacy and look forward to a future filled with devotion, growth, and community.
