Meditating on Krishna Through Art: A Review of “Bhagavad-gita for Children, Krishna Is…”

Visakha Dasi has released a new book entitled Bhagavad-gita for Children, Krishna Is… This beautifully designed volume is a meditation on Krishna’s representations and energies in this world. Through simple phrases that accompany beautiful illustrations that are ready for coloring, children can easily grasp the Gita‘s relevance. Even more, they are reminded of who Krishna is and how He’s present all around us all the time.

“For me, the teachings of the Gita are meant to be accessible to people of all ages, including the youngest among us,” said Visakha. “In fact, offering the Gita’s wisdom to the youngest is especially important because the foundational years form a template for how we approach the rest of our lives. If that template is based on the Bhagavad-gita‘s wisdom, we will surely have a rewarding life.”

Krishna Is… is the third in a series by Visakha entitled, Bhagavad-gita for Children. She started this series in 1996 (Srila Prabhupada’s centennial year), with the publication of Our Most Dear Friend.

Since that book was and continues to be well received, Visakha felt encouraged to produce more books for children based on the basics of Krishna consciousness. (Our Most Dear Friend is still available and has been translated into multiple languages.)

“Last year, I released Virtues for a Happy Life, also for children, which explores four virtues based on the Gita‘s teachings,” Visakha explained. Krishna Is… is interactive and more simple than the other two books in the series. My hope is that this recent book is fun and entertaining for children and they begin to see Krishna everywhere through its pages.”

When asked to share with ISKCON News readers a little more about Krishna Is…, Visakha said, “The Gita‘s tenth chapter, the Opulence of the Absolute, mentions dozens of representations of Krishna in this world. And a careful read of the Gita‘s other chapters uncovers dozens more statements by Krishna that reveal His presence. As He Himself says, “Know that all opulent, beautiful, and glorious creations spring from but a spark of My splendor” (Gita 10.41).

The 108-page paperback is not limited to children. “Recently, I learned that adults also like to color,” said Visakha. “Apparently, coloring has become a form of meditation for many people; they become absorbed in the creative activity and feel their anxieties dissipate as a result. What better subject to meditate on and be absorbed in than Krishna and His creation!”
