Fluffy pastries, hot samosas, pizzas, Gulab Jamun, Kolkata’s special sweets, cakes, aromatic Rice, Dal, Subzi, Paneer, Kheer, chutney and other delicacies greet every visitor at the newly opened Govindas restaurant at Iskcon temple. The sanctified vegetarian restaurant is a great place for holistic culinary experience. Menu has various options – North Indian, south Indian, Chinese etc. Food and ingredients are fresh and organic. At the end of the menu you will find a detailed note regarding the benefits of eating vegetarian food. It scientifically explains that how vegetarian food nourishes both body and mind.

The restaurant is located within the temple complex of ISKCON kolkata. Temple is on the first floor and just below there is the Govindas. The place where Govindas has been built was earlier occupied by a lady tenant. She was staying there for 57 years and was very reluctant to leave the place. The lady was not just uncooperative but even used to cook non – vegetarian foods ignoring the sentiments of the devotees. Her part of the building was unkempt and in sharp contrast to the beautifully maintained temple above the ground floor.

Now the same place houses one of the most popular new restaurants of the city.

Spread across 3500 sq ft, Govindas has a seating capacity of around 100 people. The ambience gives an experience of rich Indian Vedic culture. Walls are colorfully painted and decorated with pictures of Lord Krishna with the cowherd boys of Vrindavan, Srimati Radharani with the cowherd girls, forest grove’s of Vrindavan, Mayapur, sacred rivers of India etc. As you enter the restaurant you will be greeted by well dressed attendants with “Hare Krishna”. Their friendly demeanor will make you feel at home. The restaurant opens at 9 a.m. and closes by 10 p.m. It’s open all seven days a week.

“We had hoped to open a restaurant in the temple for many years, said H.G. Radharaman Prabhu, General Manager, Iskcon kolkata.” “Now not only our congregation, but many neighbours who previously had no impetus to visit the temple are now regular visitors and fast friends.”

The temple itself has also undergone major renovations over the past three years. A new altar has been built for the deities, beautiful marble flooring has been done, kitchen has been upgraded and many other facilities have been brought in so that the visitors can enjoy the temple ambience.

Rates are reasonable and taste is enticing. If you are fond of “Higher Taste” then do visit “Govindas – The Higher Taste”, you will cherish the rich experience.
