ISKCON News is the modern incarnation of the print newspaper “ISKCON World Review,” later titled “Hare Krishna World.” It offers news articles, people profiles, feature articles, and opinion pieces related to the ISKCON World.
ISKCON News is intended for a broad audience that includes both Hare Krishna devotees and the general public. Our articles are therefore written as per current journalistic standards and with the greater public in mind.
Top Stories: These are quite simply our biggest stories of the week. They can be news, features or people stories, but they are always more topical, interesting, and longer than other stories—ie. they have had the most work put into them. Each week, there are new top stories, and the old ones are demoted—usually to the Inside ISKCON section.
Inside ISKCON: This is exactly what it sounds like: News that is directly about ISKCON (eg: Ratha Yatra in Alaska) and/or ISKCON members (eg: Vishnu Dasa becomes GBC). Inside ISKCON also includes “feature” stories which examine people, trends, and relevant topics in ISKCON, as well as reviews of art, music, or literature.
World News: This is news that is not about ISKCON, but that is especially relevant or interesting to our readers. For instance, stories about vegetarianism, yoga, the environment, spirituality, trends in religion, and more. Most of these are re-posts from the secular press. If you would like to submit a story from another publication for re-post, please credit the original author and publication, along with a link to the original article.
Opinion: Here you can express your opinion, and write from the first person point of view. However, bear in mind that these articles must still be based on a springboard of solid facts. Opinion pieces can offer Krishna conscious perspectives on current events or larger social or political issues. They can also offer a commentary about life in ISKCON, applying the Krishna conscious philosophy, or understanding points of Vaishnava life and theology.
News stories, feature articles and people profiles will appear in whichever section of the site the editor feels they will best fit. Opinion pieces will appear in their own opinion section.
Opinion: Articles in this section should be between 800 and 2,000 words.
News: Our general guidelines apply to writing news articles. These should be short – between 200 and 600 words, and should have relatively short paragraphs.
Feature Articles: These usually run between 1,000 and 3,000 words. Since people generally do not read long stories on the Internet, we will only accept feature stories of exceptionally high quality, interest, and readability. A feature story is an in-depth, narrative article about an event, project, or community that warrants more length because its story is particularly long, fascinating and colorful. These must be written very well and include lots of research and interviews.
People Profiles: These are similar to feature articles, yet naturally are focused on a person’s story rather than an event or project. They are usually shorter than features – between 600 and 2,000 words. They must include research on and interviews with the person. They must make the reader relate to and feel like they know the person.
