The Krishna’s Home Adult Care facility in Tucson held a pre-opening event on April 21, 2023, to celebrate the completion of their facility near the existing temple community. This joyful gathering of devotees occurred during the auspicious time of Akshaya Tritya inside the new building itself. Welcoming guests at the event, ISKCON Tucson Temple President Sandamini Devi said, “This is a monumental event not only for Tuscon but for all of ISKCON, and particularly North America.”

This inspiring non-profit was created to respond to the critical need for 24-hour Krishna-conscious care for aging devotees who have served Prabhupada’s mission for many decades. Project founders Chandini Devi and Bhakta Robert Nielson describe their vision for the project, “At a crucial time of their lives, devotees will be able to practice bhakti and continue their engagement in Krishna consciousness in a pure atmosphere,” said Bhakta Robert.

The home can accommodate up to ten devotees at full capacity. There is already a waiting list of seven devotees. Krishna’s Home is looking for home health care assistants as well as volunteers who will lovingly care for their future residents. Bhakta John Thompson will be the Assisted Living Manager when the facility is fully operational. “Despite physical and cognitive limitations, devotees can make garlands, offer worship and kirtans, pray japa, read and listen to shastra,” said Chandini Devi, “They will also have the opportunity to attend ISKCON Tucson Temple programs and festivals.”

The initiative has been a massive undertaking with serious challenges. In addition to the significant financial needs, efforts were hampered by COVID-19, theft of copper wiring, and other difficulties. Still, devotees persevered in their desire to serve some of the most vulnerable in our society. Jivananda Das Vanachari, who also spoke at the event, said, “When devotees have an intense desire to serve, Krsna empowers them.”

The project’s next stage is passing the rigorous process of inspections, licensing, and codes related to operating an assisted living center. Final furnishings, appliances, medical equipment, and landscaping details are also on order or planned as financial support is provided.
