What You Can Do on World Environment Day

On June 5, people from all over the world are expected to come together to celebrate World Environment Day, cleaning up beaches, planting trees, and marching in an effort to save a planet that experts fear is on the verge of extinction. Two days after the Stockholm+50 international gathering, the event will be remembered both online and in Stockholm, Sweden. Environmentalists hope that this year’s World Environment Day will spur a global effort to combat what they call the natural world’s alarming decline.

Inger Andersen, the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), said in the following video message, “We are racing against the clock.” “Action is more urgent than ever today as we face a…future of heatwaves, droughts, floods, wildfires, pandemics, polluted air, wars, and plastic-encrusted oceans.”

According to a series of recent UN investigations, the climate problem is worsening faster than previously imagined, with a 50% likelihood of global warming exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius beyond pre-industrial levels in the next five years. This, combined with widespread biodiversity loss – 1 million species are on the verge of extinction – and persistent pollution has resulted in a “triple planetary crisis,” according to UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

The subject of this year’s World Environment Day, hosted by Sweden, is “Only One Earth,” emphasizing the importance of living sustainably in harmony with nature. It emphasizes the planet’s fragility and is intended to reinforce the notion that the Earth is humanity’s only home. The topic is a nod to the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, which took place in 1972 and resulted in the establishment of both UNEP and World Environment Day.

What Can You Do Today

It is easy and common for one to feel hopeless and helpless in this situation, but let us not forget small efforts people perform, do make a difference. There are many suggestions out there on what to do and how to celebrate World Environment Day. Spread awareness on an individual level; go for an eco-friendly bike ride, take public transportation, and avoid plastic usage, but the biggest way to lower carbon emissions is the end of meat-eating and animal agriculture.

We share this planet; animals are not here for our exploitation, entertainment, or food source, and it is wreaking havoc on our planet. Living on Mother Earth is one of the things that humans and animals have in common, and other animals are helping to keep her healthy by displaying extraordinary features and talents. Bees and other insects pollinate plants including one-third of the food we eat; beavers build dams to prevent flooding and erosion, squirrels drop seeds and nuts which take root and establish trees and other plants in new places, and birds pollinate plants (like bees).  We need to do our part as well.
