On July 7, 2024, the city of Kolkata witnessed a historic moment with the inauguration of the Bhaktivedanta Sarovar, previously known as Victoria Square Park. This significant event coincided with the annual ISKCON Kolkata Ratha Yatra festival, marking a monumental day for the ISKCON community and the city’s residents alike. The inauguration of this park represents the fulfillment of a long-cherished dream of Srila Prabhupada, the founder of ISKCON, to create a serene and spiritually uplifting space in the heart of Kolkata.

The vision for Bhaktivedanta Sarovar, spanning over four acres with a lake covering 2.5 acres, is not just a park but a spiritual oasis speaking to the enduring legacy of Srila Prabhupada and the tireless efforts of the ISKCON Kolkata community. “This park will be unique because it offers a space where people can unwind from the stresses of life and find solace in a spiritually enriching environment,” said Radharaman, the Vice-Temple President of ISKCON Kolkata, during a recent interview with ISKCON News.

The journey to this momentous day has been fraught with challenges, delays, and bureaucratic hurdles. However, the perseverance and dedication of the ISKCON community have paid off. “Initially, the delay was due to various governmental processes, but finally, it happened,” Radharaman recounted. He further explained that the government had granted permission to develop the park, even allowing for innovative additions like boat rides featuring the community’s beloved Radha Govindji deities, creating a serene cultural and spiritual retreat in the bustling city.

The grand inauguration ceremony was attended by notable guests, including the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Smt. Mamata Banerjee<, who has supported several of ISKCON’s initiatives. “For the last 13-14 years, she has celebrated Srila Prabhupada – ‘the beloved son of Kolkata,’ and the West Bengal government has been instrumental in supporting our efforts,” said Radharaman. Despite the torrential rain on the day of the inauguration, the Chief Minister, members of the Kolkata community, and ISKCON devotees proceeded with the ceremony, showcasing their firm commitment.

Radharaman vividly described the scene, “It started raining very heavily like we haven’t seen in a while. Despite her health issues, the Chief Minister walked with an umbrella and completed the inauguration, demonstrating her dedication to Lord Jagannath and Srila Prabhupada’s mission.”

The Bhaktivedanta Sarovar aims to be a sanctuary not only for humans but also for migratory birds from as far away as Russia. “Many migrating birds come and stay in this lake during winter, making it a haven for wildlife as well,” the vice temple president shared. The park aims to be a space for holistic retreats, offering kirtans, boat festivals, and stress relief programs, creating an atmosphere of peace and spiritual rejuvenation.

The vision for Bhaktivedanta Sarovar extends beyond providing a recreational space. It is also a center for environmental stewardship and community engagement. “We will conduct water tests and collaborate with researchers to maintain the highest environmental standards,” said Radharaman. The park’s connection to the Ganga waters ensures its sanctity and purity, enhancing its spiritual significance.

Furthermore, ISKCON Kolkata has ambitious plans to acquire and preserve various historical sites associated with Srila Prabhupada and other acharyas in Kolkata. “There are many tirthas associated with Srila Prabhupada and our previous acharyas here. We are planning to acquire these significant sites to preserve our spiritual heritage,” Radharaman explained. He highlighted the importance of community support in achieving these goals and appealed for assistance from the global ISKCON community.

The inauguration of Bhaktivedanta Sarovar is a milestone in ISKCON Kolkata’s history, fulfilling another vital part of Srila Prabhupada’s vision. It stands as a beacon of spiritual and environmental harmony in the heart of Kolkata, offering a place for reflection, community, and connection with nature within the cityscape.

As Radharaman Das eloquently put it, “This park is a blessing, not just for ISKCON but for the entire community. It is a place where people can come to unwind, find peace, and connect with the divine.” The Bhaktivedanta Sarovar promises to be a lasting legacy, contributing to ISKCON’s overall mission by promoting Krishna consciousness and environmental stewardship.

In the years to come, Bhaktivedanta Sarovar will undoubtedly become a cherished sanctuary for thousands, a place where Srila Prabhupada’s timeless teachings will continue to inspire and uplift all who visit.
