Like a surprise pot of chipped-rice and yogurt won at a panihati festival auction, Mahimamrita Dashakam, a song released to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the installation of Shri Shri Radha-Vallabha at ISKCON Melbourne, is packed with many delectable flavours.

The song begins by describing ISKCON Melbourne as “śrī-prabhupāda tīrthaṁ” where ISKCON’s Founder-Acharya His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada performed relentless preaching and writing pastimes, and by his potency transformed a mundane land into a holy tirtha, a sacred place of pilgrimage. The poet then uses Srila Prabhupada’s own words to describe this temple as “non-different from Vrindavana…

Describing the Lord’s inner reasons to come to Melbourne, Victoria, it sings of Their compassion for suffering humanity, especially for the residents of Melbourne.

A poetic retelling of the actual installation ceremony literally takes us back to the day. The loving mood that pervaded those events and the ambiance that radiated the environment has been tastefully captured in other verses.

Then there are earth-shatteringly beautiful descriptions of the Deities, the purport to the particular mudras or gestures in which They have manifested Themselves here, and how Their Lordships are now engaging Their beloved devotees in daily service.

There are also descriptions of the current festivals, events and community get-togethers hosted enthusiastically by ISKCON Melbourne across the year.

The stand-out verse, however, is Verse Ten of the composition, which is a description of the shaligram-shilas, the various manifestations of Lord Krishna in sacred stone-like forms residing at ISKCON Melbourne. The pure devotional genius of this verse leaves a cooling aftertaste in the heart like a generous scoop of camphor-flavored sweet rice eaten on a hot summer’s day!

The song closes on describing five stand-out features of ISKCON Melbourne: (1) Opulent worship of the deities, (2) Regular celebration of grand festivals, (3) Large-scale prasadam distribution, (4) Ever-expanding public outreach initiatives, and (5) Systematic education programs.
