A Siberian court is set to give a key ruling on the Bhagavad Gita ban row on Tuesday.
The court will act on the appeal of Tomsk district prosecutors against the verdict of a trial court, which had dismissed their petition to ban the translation of the Hindu holy scripture Bhagavad Gita As It is by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder of the Indian Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).
Last December, the trial court had rejected the petition to ban the book. The petition termed it an ‘extremist literature, which incites social hatred and violence against non-believers’ in Russia.
The case created an outcry in India with angry MPs forcing Parliament to adjourn, while demanding the Centre take up the issue with the Russian government.
External affairs minister S.M. Krishna condemned the case as ‘patently absurd’.
