March 13, 2014. “Rhis is my mother, Sally Aggarwal!" a younger one says. "She sponsored Srila Prabhupada on the Jaladuta from India in 1965!” she proudly declared.
The Honorable Martin J. Walsh, Mayor of the city of Boston, has signed a proclamation declaring August 17, 2014 to be "Sri Krishna Janamastami Day", a first for Boston ISKCON. It was at Boston’s Commonwealth Pier in 1965 that Srila Prabhupada first set foot on Western soil, and where he composed his prayer "Markine Bhagavata-dharma", entreating Lord Krishna for the spiritual deliverance of the western countries.

It was a Friday, August 13, 1965. At 9 in the morning, a lonely, elderly gentleman, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami boards a ship at Calcutta Port sailing to New York. The black cargo ship, small and weathered, was anchored at dockside. Sailors curiously saw the elderly saffron dressed sadhu as he spoke last words to his companion in the taxi and walked determinedly towards the boat. Music and video by Dr. Sahadeva Dasa.
By the time Srila Prabhupada passed away, there were more than 100 branches of his ISKCON all over the world.

On Thursday 13th August, ISKCON-London officially launched their year-and-a-half long celebrations across 2015 and 2016 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of ISKCON by holding a festival to mark 50 years since Srila Prabhupada departed from India to the US aboard the Jaladuta.

Vrindavan Chandra had been the only family member present when Srila Prabhupada boarded the Jaladuta to leave for the U.S. on August 13th, 1965. He related the experience when he attended the 50thanniversary celebration of Prabhupada’s historical journey at Netaji Stadium in 2015.
The specially commissioned sculpture was created for ISKCON’s 50thanniversary celebrations in 2016. Designed by Russian devotee Madan Mohan Das and sculpted by Ukranian artist Volodymyr Zhuravel, the beautifully detailed bronze piece depicts Srila Prabhupada disembarking from the Jaladuta cargo ship at Boston’s Commonwealth Pier.
It is 60 years ago, on 10th of March 1959, that the MS Jaladuta was launched at its shipbuilding yard in Lubeck Germany. It is this vessel that brought A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada from Calcutta, via Boston, to New York on a journey that started on August 13th 1965, in what did become an astonishing journey and the start of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness.
