Bhakti Kids, an initiative by ISKCON Congregational Development Ministry (CDM), has announced the Bhishma Panchaka Challenge from November 11th to 15th. Led by Gourangi Gandharvika Devi Dasi, this event aims to engage children, youth, and families in a spiritual celebration that not only deepens their connection to Lord Krishna but also offers a fun and meaningful way to end the sacred month of Kartika.
The last five days of Kartika, known as Bhishma Panchaka, are particularly significant in Gaudiya Vaishnavism. Grandfather Bhishma, one of the greatest devotees and warriors in the Mahabharata, observed this fast, which greatly pleased the Lord. In response, Sri Krishna granted Bhismadeva the blessing of pure devotion that extends to anyone who follows Bhishma Panchaka by worshiping Lord Hari and engaging in devotional service.
His deep devotion to Lord Krishna is remembered and honored during this time, and devotees observe the period with fasting, increased prayer, and contemplation. According to the Padma Purana, undertaking such austerities pleases the Lord and helps one make immense spiritual advancement. The final day, Purnima (the full moon), marks the culmination of these observances.
The Bhishma Panchaka Challenge, organized for the first time by Gaurangi Devi Dasi, is a special opportunity to take part in these devotional practices. Gaurangi, who has been inspired by her spiritual master, HH Jayapataka Swami, hopes to create an uplifting experience that resonates especially with children and youth.
The idea for the Bhishma Panchaka Challenge came after the overwhelming success of last year’s Purusottama Challenge, which attracted more than 3,600 participants, many of whom became devotees after the participation. Children, in particular, were enthusiastic participants, with many sharing their realizations and requesting more challenges. “Since she was a young girl, Gaurangi has always enjoyed taking on spiritual vows, and for her, it’s always been fun! After the Purusottama Challenge, she received so much positive feedback. Children, especially, loved it and asked for more challenges every month,” said Adidevi Devi Dasi, Gaurangi’s mother.
Participants in the Bhishma Pancaka Challenge can choose from three levels: Adwaita Gosai Level, Nitai Raya Level, and Saci Suta Level. Each level includes five devotional activities aimed at fostering a deeper connection with Lord Krishna. These activities consist of reciting the glories of Bhishma, chanting, offering arati to Lord Damodara, singing Damodarastakam, and reading or hearing enchanting stories about Krishna.
The Bhishma Panchaka Challenge is unique because it brings together the joy of Krishna Consciousness with many spiritual benefits. During these sacred days, one earns 100 times the spiritual benefit for one’s efforts. These benefits add to one’s bhakti’ bank account’, helping one become closer to Krishna.
Participants will receive a certificate signed by Jayapataka Swami upon completing the challenge. The names of the participants will also be offered to the deities in Mayapur, Sri Sri Radha Madhava, Panca-tattva, Nrsimhadeva, and Jagannath. Participants will also have the opportunity to hear from Jayapataka Swami, Candramauli Swami, Gauranga Darshan Das, Urmila Devi Dasii, and Jahnavi Nimai Priya Dasi will share their wisdom and experiences to help uplift the spirits of participants.
The Bhishma Panchaka Challenge transcends mere discipline as it emphasizes the fun aspect of Krishna Consciousness, which is the principle behind Bhakti Kids’ vision. It is an invitation to anyone who wants to make their Kartika season extraordinary. Whether you’re a parent looking to engage your children in spiritual activities or a youth wanting to explore Krishna Consciousness in a new way, this challenge offers a meaningful, fun, and spiritually enriching experience.
