YouTube has recently bestowed Bhuvanasundari Radha Devi Dasi with the coveted Silver Button Award for her channel, “Krishna’s Cuisine,” which she began in May 2020. The social media honor is for YouTube creators who have reached the milestone of 100,000 subscribers, a feat only achieved by 0.28% of all YouTube channels.
ISKCON News interviewed Bhuvanasundari Radha about how she felt after receiving the title and how the YouTube channel “Krishna’s Cuisine” manifested. She exclaimed, “I am very happy to receive the Silver Button. I humbly dedicate this to HDG AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada. I feel this is a reciprocation from Srila Prabhupada and Lord Jagannath.”
She expressed her heartfelt gratitude and continued, “This gives me more enthusiasm to cook for their Lordships and share with devotees. During this journey, I also learned many things from devotees. Many thanks to every viewer.”
Bhuvanasundari Radha connected to ISKCON through the Bhakti Vriksha program about 20 years ago in Muscat, Oman. “I used to cook for about 70-80 devotees in Bhakti Vriksha programs and festivals in Muscat,” she said, “After sometimes I learned that many people struggle and misunderstand Vedic cooking standards of avoiding onion and garlic.”
She started the “Krishna’s Cuisine” channel to help viewers implement the Vedic cooking standards and experience the happiness of preparing food for the Supreme Lord. She said, “If the viewer starts watching the recipe video with Prabhupada’s background kirtan, their spiritual credits start building up. The desire that ignites in their mind to prepare some bhoga item and offer it to the Supreme Lord by placing Tulasi maharani itself purifies them. Honoring prasadam nourishes the body and soul, and one starts experiencing spiritual bliss. If a person is habituated to eating prasadam, their tongue will be completely satisfied, and there will be no more hankering.”
Regarding the response she received from the viewers, Bhuvanasundari Radha said, “I regularly receive compliments and comments from the viewers saying which recipes they tried and which ones came out excellent. Many people have started chanting the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra. Prabhupada’s instruction offers the most simple and joyful method- by honoring prasadam, we can become devotees.”
However, there were many challenges that she faced. She said, “I always face questions from the viewers about the genuine quality of the ingredients (especially Ekadashi). Many viewers asked for recipe videos in their native language of Hindi, so I began separate Hindi versions for each recipe to meet their needs.”
To reach a diverse audience, Bhuvanasundari Radha prepares many varieties from broad categories ranging from savories to sweets. She added, “I love sharing authentic recipes that carry forward the legacy and traditional flavors that are almost lost. I prepare dishes from a variety of Indian and International Cuisine.”
Asked about the next steps, Bhuvanasundari Radha mentioned, “I’m shooting and editing all my videos on my mobile phone. It would be great if someone could help me raise funds for a professional videography camera and a laptop for professional video editing.”
She concluded the interview by quoting a verse from the Bhagavad Gita, which notes how one truly eats sin if one prepares food for personal sense enjoyment (BG 3.13).
